How the 2026 World Cup Knockout Bracket Works (It’s New)

With 48 teams, the 2026 knockout stage looks different from every World Cup before it:

  • 32
A brand-new Round of 32. For the first time, 32 teams reach the knockouts instead of 16 — the top two from each of the 12 groups (24 teams) plus the 8 best third-placed teams. The other 16 go home after the group stage.
  • No second draw. Bracket slots follow a pre-set template: FIFA published 495 possible combinations in “Annex C” before a ball was kicked, so the group results do all the work — group winners get a theoretically kinder route, and the eight third-placed qualifiers are slotted against group winners. (That’s how you get ties like England vs DR Congo and France vs Sweden.)
  • Single-elimination to the final. Round of 32 → Round of 16 → quarter-finals → semi-finals → final — 31 knockout matches, plus a third-place playoff on July 18. The final is Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey), 3 PM ET.
  • The tie-breakers changed too. The best third-placed teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary (team conduct) score, and finally FIFA ranking.

Running a bracket pool? A common scoring system is 1 point per Round-of-32 pick, 2 for the Round of 16, 4 per quarter-final, 8 per semi-final and 16 for the champion. Grab our free printable bracket and office-pool scoring sheet → /pool/
